Browns Bay Heritage Virtual Walk

Browns Bay Heritage.jpg

Glen has been a member of the club for a decade, including time on the committee, two years as President and convenor for a number of groups.

We will time travel from a deep stream-fed bay surrounded by primal forests to the present day. We will learn how nature changed the geography. We will hear the stories and see the photos of the earliest human interaction and how a community evolved and existed dependent on coastal steamships and mud tracks with the nearest school, store and post office in Albany.

In the summers of the 1920s-30s the area was know as “naughty bay”, a lock-up and station had to be built and a constable sent up from Auckland. How a small vulnerable community coped through the wars. How in the 50’s -70’s, renowned boat builders contributed to international yachting and the impact on the community with the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1959.
